Mentoring Certificate Course

Course Code: ES18MCC1

This 36 hour certificate course will provide practical advice, strengthen skills and widen and broaden perspectives of mentoring colleagues in a school setting. Mentors are the heart of a learning-focused relationship. They give their time, expertise and support to colleagues who are new to the professional or a particular teaching assignment or are seeking their teaching qualifications. Mentors want to know how to improve their collaborative skills. They appreciate techniques on how best to support their mentees in a reciprocal manner. Mentors are no longer viewed solely as experts but as partners in a collaborative journey who seek to answer the many problems of practice that educators face.

Participants learn the theoretical fundamentals of mentoring and practical applications such as how to develop, maintain and extend learning focused relationships. Participants learn that the role of the mentor is complex and sophisticated and that the mentor role is influenced by social, cultural, personal and professional norms and beliefs. Participants act as learning resources for each other and develop their “open to learning” stance while refining their professional practice through ongoing-inquiry, dialogue and reflection. Participants will appreciate the direct application of the Ethical Standards and Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession to the mentoring role.
