Early identification and intervention are key to developing successful learners. This course focuses on content and teaching methods appropriate to the Primary Division (JK-Grade 3). In this course, you will study how the young school-age child adjusts to school and to formal learning. The course highlights child development for the five to eight year old, the issues in implementing the Ontario curriculum and its learning expectations, the importance of good assessment and evaluation and how they apply to the Ontario report card, implications of EQAO testing at Grade 3, the role of the two Early Years Expert Panel Reports, and current knowledge of educational theory and instructional practices. You will review the critical role played by language across the curriculum, the importance of mathematics and science, the research on primary education, and the rich learning environment provided by the arts in the primary classroom.
