Qiang Zha holds a PhD in Higher Education from OISE/UT and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education, York University. Qiang Zha is also an affiliated member of the Centre of Excellence on Research on Immigration and Settlement (CERIS) – The Ontario Metropolis Centre since 2007 as well as a research fellow with the Institute of Higher Education Studies at Fudan University (Shanghai) and the Developmental Studies Center of the Anhui Provincial Government (Hefei) in China since 2006. He has been an invited reviewer of The China Quarterly and Asia Pacific Education Review since 2004.

He has written and published nearly 20 referred journal articles and book chapters in journals such as Higher Education, Higher Education Policy, Higher Education in Europe or Harvard China Review. In 2004, he was a co-recipient of the UNESCO Palgrave Prize on Higher Education Policy Research, which is sponsored by Palgrave-Macmillan Ltd. Currently, Qiang Zha is a co-investigator on the SSHRC-supported project China’s Move to Mass Higher Education: Implications for Democratization and Global Cultural Dialogue. This project looks at China’s move to mass higher education in terms of the policy making process and the empirical experience. It also considers the implications for the growth of civil society and democracy through a survey of students and focus group meetings with faculty and students at nine public and three private universities.
